Award-winning playwright and author Mary Miller writes about the "human condition with humor and heart." Author of the short play FERRIS WHEEL, Mary is recognized by Random House as one of America's "finest playwrights." She has won over a dozen national playwriting awards including the National Repertory Theatre Foundation, the Dayton Future Fest (twice), and honorable mention in the prestigious Jane Chamber Playwriting Award. She is best known for her play FERRIS WHEEL, which was a finalist at the Actors Theatre of Louisville and published in the anthology TAKE TEN: New 10-Minute Plays (Random House). Since its publication Ferris Wheel has been produced across the United States, in nine countries, and translated into three languages.
In 2020 her voice as a writer was given "full-throated endorsement" from the Eugene O'Neill 2020 National Playwrights Conference where WITNESS was honored as semifinalist, placing it in the top 20% of more than 1,500 submissions. Her ideas as well as her voice were both singled our as "vital to the continual evolution of American theatre."
Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Mary graduated with honors from Westminster High School. Upon graduation she received the BRANHAM AWARD for academic excellence and was inducted into the WESTMINSTER HALL OF FAME for her career on the National tennis circuit. Mary received her B.A. at Hollins in Roanoke, VA, after having studied at the University of London in London, England, and Davidson College in Davidson, N.C. She gained her theatrical experience in New York City, first as an actress and then as a playwright.
As an actress she appeared both on stage (Off-Off Broadway) as well as on television. She studied acting at HB Studios, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and with such renowned teachers as Warren Robertson, David Man, and Mira Rostova. For two years she worked on the daytime soap opera ALL MY CHILDREN.
Turning her hand to writing Mary made her New York debut as a playwright with the production of LIGHT BURGERS WALTZING THROUGH THE GARDEN WITH JOE. She went on to win the Dayton Playhouse Future Fest with I WITNESS (a precursor to WITNESS) and WAITING FOR OPRAH. Her play A MATTER OF GRACE was a winner in the National Repertory Theatre Foundation as well as a recipient of honorable mention from the Jane Chamber Playwriting Award. With the publication of FERRIS WHEEL her work has gone on to receive international attention. More recently MIA'S MONOLOGUE from her play WAITING FOR OPRAH was published in the collection AUDITION MONOLOGUES for YOUNG WOMEN. A collection of contemporary audition pieces for aspiring actresses.
After living in New York City, Mary moved back to Georgia where she continues to write and see her work produced. She first became involved in radio and worked for WMOG-AM hosting the "Open Mike" show, a live morning call-in program. From radio she moved into television working for WBSG-TV. There she produced, wrote, and served as anchor on the half-hour television series "Close-Up 21."
Having garnered success as a playwright, Mary turned her hand to novels and has subsequently written
A CHRISTMAS HOUSE and A MATTER OF GRACE.
Currently she is focusing her attention on her ACTING HEALTHY program. She has been invited to speak in numerous venues from Westminster's "Beyond the Gates" Distinguished Speakers Series, in Atlanta, GA, to Women of Influence Annual Breakfast in Pittsburgh, PA, where her play "Next" was produced in conjunction with Excela Health and Seton Hill University's Breast Cancer Awareness Program.
